Year in Review

The end of year feels like the race to the finish line. For some this means a welcome break and reprieve from work responsibilities and seasonal festivities. During this down time, be sure to take some time out to reflect on the year that has just gone. Anthony Robbins says, A life worth living is a life worth recording. So pick up your pen and some paper and spend a little me time reflecting on what has happened this year. Here are some questions to help you:

1. What were my top three major milestones for this year?

2. What do I feel especially good about? What was my biggest contribution? What did I do right?

3. What did I learn? (skills, knowledge, insights)

4. What were the fun things in my life this year? What were the not so fun things?

5. What am I most grateful for?

The Year Ahead

If this year seemed like carbon copy of last year, then it is time to take stock of what worked and what did not for you. Time for some real evaluation of what is going in your life. Fill out the Wheel of Life and see where you are out of balance. Decide to address this once and for all, for the rest of your life. How good does that feel??

To help you orient around what you really want for yourself next year, here are some more questions to ponder:

1. What are the 10 aspects or elements of you or your life that you want to enjoy for the rest of your life?

2. What are the 10 aspects or elements of you or your life that just don’t fit any longer, for the rest of your life?

3. Jump ahead to the end of your life. What are the three most important lessons you have learned and why are they so critical?

4. Who are you at your best?

5. What one-sentence inscription would you like to see on your tombstone that would capture who you really were in your life?

If these questions seem long term, they are. We’re playing for keeps. This is not only the BIG game, it is THE game. Life - be in it.

Powerful Questions to Fasttrack Your Success

Help with making decisions is one of the main reasons people hire me as their coach. People find it extraordinarily difficult to make decisions they feel confident in. The process of labouring over a decision is often a lot worse than any outcome that comes from the decision they finally choose. It does not have to be this difficult! By asking good questions you can get good results. By developing a set of key questions to ask when faced with decisions, you can filter out the wrong decisions more easily. Hence the term, filter questions.

There are a few key tips for asking good questions:

1. Know your outcome.

By knowing the result you ultimately want (whether from a goal, personal mission, or living your life based on your values), it will become easier to formulate empowering questions.

For example, you might use one or more of the following questions:
Does this support me in achieving my goal (s)?
Does this align with my personal mission?
Does this support the lifestyle I am creating?
Does this support my organisation’s goals/mission/vision?
Is this going to be fun/rewarding/a growth experience?
Will this harm or nurture me?

2. Remember you get what you focus on.

The mind will find answers to anything you ask it, so make sure you ask good questions. If you ask bad questions, you will get bad answers. For example, if you ask questions like Why am I so fat? It will find answers to this such as because you are lazy, because you are a pig, because you can’t help yourself. A better question would be, How do I become fit and healthy? This type of positively focused questions keeps you on target with your goals and creates positive momentum. Here are some examples of some bad questions with some good alternatives:

Bad: Why can’t I earn more money? Better: How can I earn more money?
Bad: Why can’t I find a boyfriend/girlfriend? Better: What kinds of qualities do I need to develop to attract my ideal mate?
Bad: How did I end up in this dead end job? Better: How can I create new job opportunities for myself?

3. Life has no meaning except that which we give it.

The mind talks incessantly to us. Monitor your internal dialogue and take control of how you feel about what is happening in your life. Use good questions to determine how you feel and think about events. Questions can also be used to filter actions and growth from experiences.

Here are some more examples of bad and better questions to help empower you:
Bad: Why did this happen to me? Better: What is good about this situation?
Bad: Who did this to me? Better: What did I do to contribute to this situation?
Bad: How did things get so bad? Better: How can I take control and make things better?

Did you notice a difference in the energy as you read the better questions? Being aware of your internal dialogue and using questions to empower you instead of persecuting you will make an enormous difference to the quality of your outcomes as well as the way you feel about events.

From Goals to Plans Learning the Hard Way

March 22nd, 2009 at 09:08pm Under Goal-Setting

Digg me

I spent some of my time on holiday reflecting on the year and the goals I had set for myself. I was pleased with my achievements. I released Compass Bearings, launched my website, and quadrupled my client base.

And then I noticed one of the most jaw-dropping, glaring, but I know this stuff kind of observations. It was this: the difference between the goals I did achieve and those that fell by the wayside was simply this: a plan. Yes I know - this is obvious - the difference between a ‘goal’ and a ‘wish’ is a plan.

This principle was so evident in what transpired for me last year: my business goals were written down clearly, I broke them up into small manageable chunks, and I went about ticking off the items one at a time. It felt good to achieve little things - it kept the momentum going and I felt fabulous about moving forward with my dream business. The result - I kicked ‘butt’ at kicking this goal!

My ‘goal’ of learning scuba diving simply remained an articulated ‘wish’ - all thought no action. Though I ‘only’ missed out on learning a new sport, what I really missed out on, for me, was this: nurturing a passion and a quality experience that I would have found enriching. I missed out on a real source of joy. All because I did not draft and follow through on a simple plan (Step 1. Find out where and who delivers scuba lessons Step 2. Book time off. Step 3. Go!)

How did you on your goals last year? Did you make a plan and follow through? Or were there things you missed out on - all for lack of a plan? Don’t let this year be a replay of past mistakes - let this be your year!

Here are my tips for transforming a ‘wish’ into a ‘reality’ (and yes I know - they are very, very simple - so no excuses not to do it!)

1. Pull out your list of goals for this coming year.

2. Set a date for achieving them next to each one.

3. Write a detailed list of what you need to do to make this goal a reality. Break the actions up into the smallest possible actions.

4. Schedule these actions in your diary and on your calendar.

5. Do one task. Celebrate. Do another. Celebrate. Do another. Celebrate. Enjoy taking control of your life and creating a reality you love.

Remeber - Life is for Living!

What Are Your Priorities?

March 22nd, 2009 at 09:08pm Under Goal-Setting

We live in a world with opportunity at our fingertips. Information is one click away, career tracks change faster than a baby’s diaper, we can connect instantly with others through phone and internet, and travel is cheap… $60 flights to the Gold Coast…hmmm…

We have choice, we have knowledge, we have resources. With so much opportunity it is not surprising we find ourselves swamped with opportunities and struggling to make any choice at all!

Too many choices can really hamper productivity. Not only are there so many choices to make, but how do we know which one is the right for us? A lot of time can be spent ‘hmming’ over whether to finish a report or choose a training course or surf the net for the latest deal on running shoes.

The reality is that productivity starts with you. Your core priorities and key objectives, for the whole of your life, form the foundation on which you make choices for all your activities. You will know instantly whether an opportunity is really an opportunity that fits with your life plan, or simply a nice (though perhaps exciting!) distraction.

Take Action: Choose your priorities carefully.

Think about the different aspects of your life (work, finances, family, knowledge, self, home, romance, spirituality, friendship) Write down what you want your life to look like in each of these areas. Your projects and goals flow from this big picture view. From each goal/project flows a list of tasks with deadlines. Schedule your tasks as priorities. Any opportunities that come up that don’t support these goals are simply distractions and you can say ‘no’ to them with confidence, knowing you are choosing the right path for your life design.

Tip: Your number one priority should be this: HEALTH.

It is the key to enjoying all your activities and having the energy to accomplish everything you set out to do. Without your health, it is difficult to feel joy, or happiness. A broken body, an illness, a disease severely inhibits even the most positive person from enjoying their life. Make HEALTH your number one priority. Everything else flows on from this. Zo Routh

30 Second Marathon Success Blueprint

March 22nd, 2009 at 09:08pm Under Goal-Setting

When I took my first steps after surgery for cancer last year I struggled to make it across the room. A few weeks later I was still only able to hobble 50 steps or so, clutching at my abdomen as the scar tissue tugged. After chemotherapy and many months of hospitals, nausea, and exhaustion my body was 8kg (16 pounds) heavier, exhausted, bloated, and nauseous. And I wanted to run a marathon.

I found a trainer, Chris Lonsdale, who agreed to take me on. Luckily he did not laugh at me when I told him I wanted to run a marathon - 26 miles, 42.2km. He did not see the broken and labouring body; he saw the spirit in me, the fire in my eyes, the determination, will, and inspiration to achieve what looked like the impossible.

This crippled person was not who I was - I was a strong, energetic, full of life kind of gal. The picture I had in my head was of a healthy, gazelle-like athlete springing across the hills for ten kilometre runs. OK, those who know me know my body is more ‘bellydancer-like’ than ‘gazelle-like’, but the picture of health was one of ease and grace (like a gazelle!).

I had a vision of who I wanted to be and what I wanted to achieve. This however bore no resemblance to where I was in the present moment. My body was heavy, I lacked energy, I got dizzy with more than an hour of effort on anything, including reading. Walking for ten minutes at a slow pace was exhausting. How was I going to run a marathon??

This is when the magic of focus and clear intentions took over. I held the dream in front of me in a bright, shiny picture. I imagined what it would feel like to run long distances again, to feel the wind swirl around me as I ran effortlessly for hours. I felt the exhilaration of this picture in all the cells of my body. I did this every time I struggled up a hill on a walk after a chemo treatment. I did this each time I stepped on the treadmill. I could only manage a few minutes of walking at a slow pace, but in my mind’s eye I was a healthy, fit marathon runner.

Some days were much harder than others. Regaining fitness really hurts. I felt heavy, breathless, and laboured through all the workouts. I was tempted to throw in the towel - it seemed like such a long way to go, such a huge effort, and my body was so far from the condition it needed to be to tackle even a few kilometres, let alone 42!

My trainer kept me focussed on the 30-second training rule. This is where each time you workout you push just a little harder than last time. Just one more repetition on the weights, just 30 more seconds on the machine, just one more push up. I would think, Come on - I may not be able to run a marathon yet, but I CAN do another 30 seconds. Each day I exercised I was stronger than the last. Each week I was much stronger than the previous week. After three months I could run 20km again. Four months after that I could run 5 hours and finish a marathon. 30 seconds of focus, repeated again and again, got me through the marathon 7 months after chemotherapy.

How many of us stop short of pursuing a goal, a dream, when we look around at our present circumstances? Do you stop and think, that is so far from where I am now - I’ll never make it. I don’t know even where to start. It is just too hard/too far/too long/too complex/too expensive? Sometimes we stop before we begin because the gap between where we are and where we want to be appears so vast.

Here’s a reality check. WAKE UP! You are in charge! You are at the helm of your ship. Your present situation is the result of PAST thought; your future will be the result of your thoughts and actions NOW. So even if you don’t look like a marathon runner NOW, if you want to be one, you have to BE one now - in thought, in feelings, and in baby step actions.

Whatever dreams you have, here is the 30 Second Marathon Success Blue Print

Step 1. Connect with your intention. Feel inspired, know how good it will feel to achieve this thing. Experience the ‘feel good place’ of that intention as if you had already achieved it. Hold it like a photograph in your mind’s eye. Look at that photo and feel all the ‘memories’ flood in.

Step 2. Get support. Work with someone with expertise in the area of your dreams to help develop a plan and guide you there.

Step 3. Focus on baby steps. One little step at a time. Reward yourself for having taken them.

Step 4. Enjoy all parts of the journey. Celebrate the effort, the reward, and the rest and relaxation along the way. For me, the best part of the marathon was the training. Each week a new barrier crossed, a new threshold blasted.

Dreams Inventory

What are your dreams? What is your big picture? Send me an email and tell me - it will be fun to share with the readership what everyone else is aspiring to create in their lives. When you share your dream it becomes a little more real too. Why not inspire someone else and share what you desire? It could be a Mazzarati Spider in flashy silver, or a house on the beach at Harvey Bay, or a $10 million business, or publishing a book, or… Come on - share your dreams - one sentence only.

The Importance of Setting Goals In Business

March 22nd, 2009 at 09:08pm Under Goal-Setting

Goal is a skill that is so often overlooked by home business owners. Unfortunately, it is a vitally important skill when beginning your home business. If you dont have s then you really have no idea where your business is going. But that isnt even the main reason you need s. Goal is one of the most important skills you can cultivate as a home business owner.

Make a list of long and short-term s. Write the list down and make 12 copies. Then, make a list of the things you need to be doing in your business in order to achieve these s. Be specific and be aggressive when your s and determining what action is required on your part in order to achieve these s.

Now, address 12 envelopes to your and set these in your files just as bills to be paid each month. Open these each month and measure how much you have achieved the last month and where you see room for . If you arent making the progress you should be, consider what should be changed in order to initiate the changes you need to make.

Here are a few things you can do that might help you keep your attention focused on your business s.

1) Write your s down. I know Ive already told you to do that, this is taking it one step further. Grab a pad of sticky notes and get to writing. This exercise is very much like writing lines in school with a twist. Write your on fifty sticky notes. Now, put them everywhereliterally. A few great places would be car visors, bathroom mirror, bedroom mirror, headboard, computer monitor, and steering wheel. If its somewhere you look often then put your there. This way you are constantly confronted with your s and in seeing them and reading them you are subconsciously reaffirming them.

2) Tell at least 3 people. There is something about telling someone what our s are that makes us that much more determined to achieve those s. Perhaps its the fear of failure or maybe the act of telling others makes them more real to us. The more people you tell, the more likely you are to reach them.

3) Congratulate your for small victories. This is something people often forget to do. We have our eyes so focused on the prize we are trying to reach that we forget to celebrate our small victories. If we dont take the time to enjoy the smaller successes, we run the risk of burning out before we reach our ultimate s.

4) Dont be afraid to revise your s. Your s are yours alone. We all evolve over time and things that were once vitally important in our lives; sometimes become matters of little consequence to us and other things become more important over time. Your business will have similar ups and downs and your s are not set in stone.

If you are progressing well, keep up the good work and consider the possibility of your s a little higher. You dont want to overwhelm your, but you dont want to rob your of your potential either. Setting s is something that will take time to master, but once you do I believe your business will see amazing growth.

What If We Pursued Goals The Way Anorexics Do?

Anorexia: An eating disorder that makes people look better and better.

Okay, you might have your own opinion, but there are millions of people around the globe who want more than anything else to not cast a shadow, to be thin as twigs.

And if you visit their web sites, or watch their videos on YOU TUBE, youll see they are a very interesting breed.

Before you dismiss them as crazy, which they still may be, consider how committed they are to their goals. Many of them will literally DIE to be thin.

People like football great Vince Lombardi said Winning isnt everythingIts the only thing.

Pretty gritty tough stuff, am I right?

But compared to a 96 pound, 5 feet 10 inch girl who wants to lose another 10 pounds to be perfect, Lombardi and the entire NFL, yesterday and today, are wimps!

While those bruisers are stuffing their faces at opulent training tables, i.e. buffets, and getting bigger, sweet darlings everywhere are starving themselves in an attempt to get smaller.

Now tell me, whos living on Easy Street?

Imagine going hungry all of the time, and subsisting on portions so tiny that hamsters would blanch. Not your cup of tea?

You have no spineAt least the kind that can be seen thirty feet away, like any self-respecting anorexic.

Buck up, miss a meal or two, on purpose, and then lets talk about setting goals and sticking to them.

All I know is these little waifs make the rest of us look sick!

Shaping Your Dream

March 22nd, 2009 at 09:08pm Under Goal-Setting

Very often we talk about the people who have achieved success in their life. We think how they did it exactly. We think how they got such a wonderful idea? How did they dared to dream so big.

Perhaps all of us have some dream and think of making it come true. Some one of us think on it and then forget it as we find this takes lots of devotion, courage, energy and we dont find ourselves compatible and say just forget this. At the same time some of us who know how to succeed, they just go about it and make it come true. They think otherwise and are capable of devoting themselves to make their dreams come true.

In broad sense, there are basically two type of people. Positive Thinkers and Negative Thinkers. Positive thinkers think and talk positive and have self believe and courage. Negative thinkers think and talk negatives and do not have enough self believe and courage.

People who dont know the art of shaping a dream, think something like this;

  • They are not sure if they can make their dream come true.
  • They think they are not capable of making their dream come true.
  • They dont have enough finance and resources so they cannot proceed.
  • They think ahead of going ahead, what if I fail? chances are more of failing.
  • If they fail, they will loose all their money and resources and time.
  • They will think quite negatively
  • At the same time people who know the art of shaping a dream think entirely. They think like this;

    • If others can do it , why cant I.
    • I have enough resources and I am intelligent enough to make it happen.
    • They think finance cannot be a big problem and it can be arranged.
    • They will have the resources managed and they will proceed further to make their dream come true.
    • They also think about if they fail scenario; but they think even if they fail, they will feel satisfied as they gave it a try.

Achieve Your Talent Goals Even If You Lack Talent

There is no need to be envious of those who seem more talented or skilful than you. Some experts say that if you work hard and practice for many hours, you can equal the abilities of the talented. You may even out perform them. You may see your own talent emerge out of nothing.

It is only too easy to become envious of people who appear more talented than you. Everything seems to come easily to them.

My web designer can run rings round me when it comes to designing a great website and organizing uploads and downloads etc.

However, my typing speed is superior to his! Why? Because I have practiced typing without looking at the keys for years and he hasn’t. If he had put in the same amount of time typing and using the same methods that I have, his talent for typing might well equal or even overshadow mine. .

If I put in the same hours that he has web designing, my skills in this area might equal his. I am still trying to catch up with him but it will be a long haul!

In some martial arts, students are awarded higher grades on the basis of the hours they train in class. Some students excel by training on their own at home as well.

The extra hours they put in soon become obvious when they attend class. They can even out perform the naturally talented who do not train as hard as they do. Hard work can give you the edge over the talented but lazy person

Studies by researchers have shown that the difference between expert musicians concerned the ‘amounts of time they had spent in solitary practice during their music development.’ It did not depend on their IQ and other traits in which they were found to be only average.

The best experts had put in 10,000 hours of practice by the age of twenty. The least accomplished experts had practiced for 5,000 hours. Serious amateur pianists had put in 2000 hours.

Studies by Ericsson, Sloboda, Starkes and others have shown that the ‘accumulated amount of deliberate practice is closely related to the attained level of performance of many types of experts such as musicians, chess players and athletes.’

In other words practice deliberately and consistently and you will attain high levels of performance which are superior to the performance of those who have practiced less than you. You will appear talented to any observer.

Such studies can give us all hope. Spending deliberate hours of practice can improve our skills and talents. Studies of the talented do not reveal higher IQ’s or special abilities beyond the norm. They just practice more than the average person. They are ready to work harder than the average.

Tony Buzan, the great educational expert, believes that great things can happen to all of us. He teaches:

Genius is trainable. It is teachable. It is nurturable. If you look at all the people called geniuses in history they shared common characteristics. It wasnt a bigger IQ. It wasnt a bigger brain.

What was it then? Buzan answers:

It was persistence in pursuit of a vision.

Geniuses and high achievers show extraordinary self-motivation and focus. They are no cleverer than the rest of the human race but they are willing to work much harder than the majority.

We should all then expect great things of ourselves. We have the potential to achieve amazing things. We could all change human history.

Churchill was seen as a bit of a dunce at school but he knew how to ‘persist in pursuit of a vision’. He counseled the nation to never give up in the face of Nazi aggression. His vision of freedom came true because he kept fighting in the face of overwhelming odds. He held on to his dream of victory.

We all have awesome brains. Too often we dont make the most of them. Some experts, like Tony Buzan, believe that anyone can be a genius. They just need to work hard and discover the potential within them.

However, there are other experts who believe you have to be born with great talent and then have to combine this talent with powerful character traits like determination, focus and persistence.

The notorious Simon Cowell, the pop idol critic, who is famous for speaking the truth as he sees it, believes that pop singers are born and not made.

When he went to America and was one of the judges on the ‘American Idol’ panel, many people were shocked at his comments. Part of the American dream is that anyone can achieve anything if they believe and try hard enough. With a dream like this, it is no wonder that the USA still leads the world in so many areas of life.

In the UK, many people are now sceptical about everything. Such scepticism did not make Britain great.

Simon Cowell exported this scepticism to the USA and exploded the dreams of hundreds of young Americans by telling them that they could not sing however hard they tried.

When one young man asked if lessons would help, he brutally replied:

You could take two thousand lessons and still not be able to sing.

One of Simon’s fellow panelists, Paula Abdul, was shocked at his comments and much preferred to let people down easily by saying that training might well help them. Cowell described her attitude as patronising.

However, after a year or so of mutual hatred, they are now the best of friends. Many Americans say that they appreciate Simons truthfulness.

There is, of course, some truth in Simons approach. Some dreams really are impossible. A power lifter is not likely to succeed as a ballet dancer and vice versa. Humans can run fast but they cant take off and fly without the aid of machines.

SIimon can be amusing. It is easy to be amusing when you are criticizing others. He was asked if he could sing by a member of the audience. No, he replied, but after hearing that lot last night, Im beginning to think I can!

I was slung out of the school choir at the age of eight for ‘growling’. After hearing some modern singers whose ‘growling’ voices enhance their popularity, I am beginning to think that I, too, missed a huge opportunity!

People like Simon can destroy the hopes of a whole group of people. Possibly they would all fail as pop singers but how can we be sure? Some of the singers criticized by him in the UK went on to make their names in the pop business.

In the end, the only way to find out which expert is right is to test out what they say.

This involves practising a skill for roughly an hour or more a day and recording the number of hours you spend practicing. It may take hundreds of hours of practice before you see indisputable signs of improvement or even talent. It may take much less.

It may take thousands of hours of practice to become world class at some skill. Progress also depends on how well you are taught the principles behind what you are doing and on your natural abilities.

Don’t give up when the first critic speaks. Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley and The Beatles would never have made a dent in the music world if they had listened to their critics.

Don’t give up because of your age. Julius Caesar did not discover his military genius until he was in his forties. Churchill did not become a world leader until he was in his sixties.

In the world of the entrepreneurs, Colonel Sanders showed great persistence in pursuit of his dream. Kentucky Fried Chicken, with its eleven herb recipe, would not exist without his persistence. He was in his sixties when he started his first franchise. He is a great example to every pensioner in the world.

Don’t give up because results are slow in coming. Keep planting the seeds through daily hard work and eventually the results will show up. Even if they don’t, you will have transformed yourself into a powerful person who can follow through on their plans.

The start of a new year is a great time to reflect on the previous year, while gearing up for a fresh kick at the can. Now is the time to develop your focus and organize your priorities for 2007. This January, take a moment to celebrate your 2006 achievements. What went particularly well? Why not write down three of your greatest wins for 2006? You should feel great about all you have accomplished!
